Why Mouse Latency Is Worth Caring About
Most people don't think twice about mouse latency until something feels off. You click, and the game responds just a hair too late. You miss the shot. You lose the duel. You blame yourself, but honestly — sometimes it really is your gear.
Mouse latency (also called input lag) is the time between your physical click and the moment the action shows up on screen. For competitive gaming, pros typically shoot for under 8ms. Standard office mice often sit at 10–20ms or more. That gap might sound small, but when you're trying to flick onto a moving target in Valorant or react to a peek in CS2 it's the difference between a kill and a death.
The good news: a lot of this is fixable without buying a new mouse. Here are five things that actually work.
1. Get a Mouse With a 1000Hz Polling Rate (or Higher)
Polling rate is how often your mouse reports its position to your PC. A 125Hz mouse sends an update every 8ms. A 1000Hz mouse does it every 1ms. That's eight times more frequently, and it directly cuts the ceiling on how low your input delay can go.
Most gaming mice sold in the last few years already support 1000Hz — you just need to make sure it's enabled in the manufacturer software. Logitech G Hub, Razer Synapse, SteelSeries GG, and similar tools all have a "polling rate" setting. If yours is set to anything lower, bump it up now and test the difference.
Some newer mice go up to 4000Hz or 8000Hz (Razer HyperPolling, Wooting, etc.). Honest take: the jump from 1000Hz to 8000Hz is very hard to notice in actual gameplay for most people. Stick with 1000Hz unless you have specific reasons to go higher — higher polling rates do put a small extra load on your CPU.
2. Turn On Windows Game Mode
Windows Game Mode does one thing that matters a lot: it prioritizes your game's CPU thread over background system processes. That means less stuttering and, more relevant here, smoother and more consistent input event handling.
To enable it, open Windows Settings → Gaming → Game Mode and flip the toggle on. While you're in there, head to Graphics Settings and add your game to the list with "High Performance" selected. It's a two-minute setup that genuinely does reduce spikes in input latency, especially on systems that run a lot of background apps.
One thing to note — Game Mode on its own won't magically shave 10ms off your readings. It's more about consistency: preventing those ugly latency spikes that happen when Windows decides to run an update check or shuffle some memory in the middle of your match.
3. Keep Your Drivers and Firmware Updated
This one sounds boring but it genuinely matters. Mouse manufacturers release firmware updates that fix click debounce timing, polling rate consistency, and other low-level performance issues. A firmware update on a Logitech G Pro or a Razer DeathAdder can literally change your measured click latency by a few milliseconds.
Same goes for Windows mouse drivers. If you're still running generic HID drivers for a gaming mouse that has a proper software suite, you might be missing out on optimized polling behavior. Download the official software, keep it updated, and check for firmware updates every few months. It only takes a minute and the improvements can be real.
After updating firmware or drivers, it's worth running a fresh latency test to see if there's a measurable difference. Sometimes there is, sometimes there isn't — but at least you'll know you're not leaving free performance on the table.
4. Go Wired If You Can
Wireless gaming mice have gotten genuinely impressive — Logitech's LIGHTSPEED and Razer's HyperSpeed can hit sub-1ms wireless latency in ideal conditions. But "ideal conditions" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.
2.4GHz wireless runs on a crowded band. If you have a WiFi router, Bluetooth headphones, a wireless keyboard, or even a microwave nearby, all of that can create interference. Under interference, wireless mice don't fail completely — they just become slightly less consistent. You might not notice it consciously, but your latency numbers will show it.
If you're playing casually, wireless is totally fine. If you're competing seriously or your readings seem inconsistent, try plugging in for a session and compare. 5. Fix Your System Settings
A few Windows settings silently add latency that most people never turn off. The biggest offender is "Enhance pointer precision" — also known as mouse acceleration. This setting adjusts how far your cursor moves based on how fast you physically move the mouse, which sounds helpful but actually makes your input unpredictable. Disable it. Go to Control Panel → Mouse → Pointer Options and uncheck that box.
Next, check your USB Selective Suspend setting. When enabled, Windows can put USB devices into a low-power sleep state to save energy. For a mouse, waking from that state takes time — time that shows up as a latency spike. Disable it under Power Options → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings → USB Settings.
Finally, set your power plan to High Performance. This sounds like it only affects your CPU clock speed, but it also affects how quickly your system wakes from idle states and processes USB interrupt requests. The difference is small but consistent, and combined with the other tweaks above it adds up.
